That's right, all the evidence seems to point to this little ditty being a modern construction. A Lexis/Nexis search shows it didn't appear in print until 2005. A search of the Jefferson library shows nothing, nill, zip. Here's the funny thing, Jefferson was probably the least likely of the founding fathers to have spouted such nonsense. If he were alive today the right wing would assail Jefferson for his support of the death tax.
